Conversation & Homecoming - Saturday, February 24, 2024
The Country School, Talbot County Free Library, and the Avalon Foundation, sponsors, join with fourteen other community organizations to present Conversation & Homecoming with Carole Boston Weatherford and her son, Jeffery Boston Weatherford, a program free and open to all.
Born and raised in Baltimore, acclaimed author Carole Boston Weatherford also spent time with family in Copperville. Her Talbot County roots are broad and deep, extending more than 250 years. In KIN: Rooted in Hope, recently named a Coretta Scott King Author Honor book, Carole and her son, award-winning illustrator Jeffery Boston Weatherford, embark on a genealogical quest and discover that, as with the searches of many African Americans with roots in slavery, their family tree can only be traced back five generations before going dark. They discovered that their forebears lived through the American Revolution, were enslaved alongside Frederick Douglass, fought in the Civil War, and cofounded the Reconstruction-era Black villages of Unionville and Copperville. Through multi-voiced poems and dramatic scratchboard illustrations, from scraps of history, mother and son conjure the voices and visages of their ancestors, creating an often painful but ultimately empowering story of who their people were in a breathtaking book that is at once deeply personal yet all too universal
